Air National Guard Band of the Smoky Mountains

9/16/2013 - Atlanta, GA -- It was a sad day in the history of Air Force and Air National Guard bands.  The 530th Air National Guard Band, located in Atlanta, GA, and known as the Band of the South, is one of six Air National Guard bands and 3 Active Duty bands that will be inactivated as of 1 October 2013, as part of the Air Force Bands restructuring.

A ceremony was held at Dobbins AFB on Saturday, September 14 to honor the members and former members of the unit and celebrate its history.  The 572nd Air National Guard Band of the Smoky Mountains, based at McGhee-Tyson ANG base in Knoxville, TN, was asked to play as part of the ceremony.

It was a somber occasion, with tears and hugs shared throughout the day.  But it was also a day of reminiscing, seeing old friends and laughter as members of the unit shared with each other precious memories of belonging to such a group.

Members of the Band of the Smoky Mountains were humbled to have been asked to play at such a momentous occasion, and were grateful to have been able to take part in the ceremony.

Nine members of the Band of the South have traversed state lines and joined the Band of the Smoky Mountains to continue their military band careers.   We have welcomed them into our "family" and enjoy the opportunity to create incredible music and lasting friendships with them.

With the restructuring of the band program and inactivation of several bands, the area of responsibility, or AOR, of the remaining bands has expanded significantly.  Due to that responsibility change, the Air National Guard Band of the Smoky Mountains will adopt the name of the inactivated 530th band, the Band of the South, as of 1 October 2013.  We will do everything we can to ensure that we uphold the good name the Band of the South has created for themselves and to carry on the tradition of excellent musicianship that has been set forth by the members of the 530th.

To the members of the Band of the South, we thank you for your dedication to your career field and the impact that you have made all over the globe.  We appreciate your service to your country and your promise to uphold the core values of the Air Force throughout your military career.  We were humbled to be a part of this bittersweet, unforgettable day in the history of your band, and we salute you.
